overwhelmed...

The first in a series, I have a feeling...

I've just hit the point of totally and completely overwhelmed. Not just one area of my life, either. But today we're tackling the baby topic, because I need your help. When I was at the doctor yesterday, he informed me that I should have already done a number of things, of which I have done *zero*. So, here are my questions:

1) Apparently we should know who our pediatrician is. Recommendations? How does one pick a pediatrician, anyway?

2) Totally overwhelmed by the idea of doing a baby registry, because I feel so completely clueless about what I need. Help!!! What do I need? Is there stuff that's recommended but not necessary? What couldn't you have lived without?

Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if it's too much info to share in a comment. I just need help...and prayer, please.

Praying for you. Sincerely. Relax, take a deep breath. God will lead you every step of the way. There is no one perfect pediatrician out there, but I bet a name or two will be repeated that makes you check him (or her) out. I would go w/ a woman ped myself. They're more intuitive.

As for baby stuff, you will need more of the same kinds of things vs a plethora of junk. You'll need more nursing pads than you ever knew possible if you nurse. You can't get enough Onesies or diapers) but don't get too many newborn size diapers--they grow out of them FAST! Get a diaper bag you love and that Matt wouldn't be embarrassed to sling over HIS shoulder because he WILL be doing a lot of that! Invest is a great mattress if you don't have one--both for you and for the crib. That's my two cents for now.
Oh, and a great digital camera and camcorder would be money VERY WELL spent (or say "she's registered at the NIKON outlet!" heehee).

I think Libby had a blog entry about the same exact thing, and people recommended loads of things to her...

That being said, try the book Baby Bargains by Denise and Alan Fields. I know the Abingdon library has it, but not the most current edition. The book is full of reviews of everything baby...and reviews done by real people, not Consumer Reports. It even breaks down detailed info on the companies that produce baby stuff. It's a super easy read, and you can just jump to read the chapter you need.

The book was interesting b/c they reveal things like: Don't always trust the wieght of the stroller listed on the box. One stroller company, for example, lists their wieght without the wheels, but doesn't disclose that on the box. Who uses a stroller without wheels????

I definitely felt the same!!! And have a blog, like Melanie said on the very same topic! ha. I used the suggested list from Babys R Us's website. They give a pretty good list of what you'll truly need. A few of our invaluables were:
1. LARGE Swaddling blankets-Ultimate Swaddling Blanket at Babys R Us.
2. Lots of wipes and diapers
3. Pacis-so the baby doesn't eat every 30 minutes!
4. Cloth diapers to use at burp cloths
5. Gripe Water (Tiny Tummy's)-for gas.
6. LOTS of onesies-our girlie pooped and peed through so many outfits!

AND, if you really want, my registry is still on Babys R Us. Feel free to look through! It was compiled from what others told me was best! OH and Baby Bargains was like the Bible to me for registering!

Baby Bargains was the best book ever! Run and get it!

I remember feeling the same way, too especially wondering if I'd get enough for TWO babies! Here's the link from my blog where people made recommendations. Hope it's helpful.

As to pediatricians, I'd just ask around and see who people recommend that are near where you live and then pick a couple to "interview" and go from there. It's really hard to tell though, until the you see the Dr. with your baby, if it's the Dr. for you. I ended up switching Drs. because I just didn't end up liking my first Dr. Although I did stay with the same practice, and now like the Dr. I'm with. I can email you who I use.
